We often are asked about attic mold removal. Learn our step-by-step process for remediating mold, and taking care of the source for good. The post Attic Mold Removal appeared first on Twin Home Experts.
We get asked this question all the time in our Spokane, Washington & Coeur d’Alene Idaho locations – “How do I remove mold from my attic?”
The Twin Home Experts are here to guide you in the right direction. Attics are a perfect environment for mold, and most property owners forget about their attics.
Mold: Test or no test?
“Should I test it first?” – Rebecca. Spokane, WA
We believe here at Twin Home Experts , that if it’s visible there is no reason to spend money on testing. The only reason why you would want to test is if you & your family members are suffering from symptoms that are related to mold.
If that is occuring, and you don’t see it anywhere in your home, the attic is a potential source. Another solid reason to test would be if you have treated mold in your attic already, and you want to verify if it’s gone.
“Why do I have mold in my attic in the first place?” – Melissa. Hayden, ID
This is a great & very important question. No property owner should ever perform attic mold removal until you’ve detected the source. As part of our mold removal process, Twin Home Experts always detects the source prior to any mold mitigation work.
When it comes to mold growing in your attic, the causes are typically leaky roofs, heat & cold transfers from flat or metal roofs, or bathroom exhaust fans that are venting within attic space.
Leaky air ducts, insufficient air flow, air conditioners leaking below insulation, rodent urine, plumbing leaks, gutters & ice roof dams can also lead to mold growth in the attic.
Mold remediation process
“How does attic mold remediation work?” – Rich. Post Falls, ID
When we remove mold from an attic, it is a thorough, diligent and clean process. It involves a number of different steps to ensure that the problem areas are treated to be as clean and safe as possible.
Step 1 – Containing the problem
The first step in the remediation process involves quarantining the affected areas, as well as building a critical barrier from the attic access from inside the home. We do this to guarantee that the mold problem is not allowed to spread to other areas of the home.
This process involves the use of a negative air scrubber, which, in many ways, functions as a high-powered, heavy-duty air filter. It safely traps any air particles that contain mold toxins and filters them thoroughly before removing them entirely from the site of contamination.
This process of removing air also creates a vacuum effect which reduces the risk of mold particles finding their way into other parts of the home.
Step 2 – Removing contaminated items
In the second step of the remediation process, we remove everything from the attic that has been contaminated by mold. Depending on the severity of the particular case, it may be necessary to remove flooring, walls, insulation and any personal belongings that have been stored near the contamination site.
During this process, The Twins take the utmost care to seal and dispose of all affected objects in a way that keeps the contamination safely at bay.
Step 3 – Cleaning
Once the removal phase is complete, we begin the cleaning process, where we apply our rapid mold wood removing agent.
See how it works:
Step 4 – Double Checking Our Results
After the cleaning job is complete, we frequently keep our equipment at the work site for up to 72 hours depending on how much contamination there was.
Step 5 – Pick Up And Swab
Once we return to pick up equipment, we then perform a swab test and send it off to a third party accredited mold laboratory. If the results return, then we must retreat – at no additional cost of course, that’s our guarantee.
“Why is Mold Remediation Important?” – Larry. Athol, ID
Mold is a type of fungus that reproduces via tiny spores released into the air. When these spores are inhaled by humans, they can cause an allergic reaction in the immune system.
This reaction we see frequently are the following symptoms:
- Sneezing
- Nasal congestion
- Itchiness in the eyes
- Skin rashes
How do I prevent attic mold from returning?
Stop all moisture sources, this is the key. We also believe in encapsulating all exposed wood framing. We are certified in a 10-year warranted mold inhibitor, that comes in either white or clear. This is very effective way to prevent mold from coming back, as it shuts down any food source for mold to feed on and actively grow.
How much does attic mold removal cost?
Cost can vary depending on many factors, how contaminated it is, how far it’s spread, how much insulation needs to be removed, what the initial cause was etc.
We have performed over 1,800 attic mold removal projects that ranged from a high of $12,900.00 to a low of about $950.00.
