Below are some broken down costs to consider for a small bath remodel that you can add up as a quick guideline.

- New drywall & patching: $450-$1,500
- New tub/tile shower walls: 1200-$4,500

This is a very important question. You need to be very cautious of how much your contractor is requesting up front. He can only ask for $1,000 or 10% – whichever is less than the full amount.
He can then asked for a progress payment once he/she delivers the materials onsite.
The bottom line for your protection, is you want to with hold at least 30% till the end.
Do not pay 50% deposit or the entire balance upfront.
*Make sure the contractor is fully licensed, bonded and insured.

- To get only a design plan with no specific prices on specific items included, the average cost is $2,500-$3,000.

Many designers also offer one-time consultations in which they can advise you on what design ideas may be best for your bathroom. The cost of such consultations is generally $225.

How can I protect myself from cost going up once I start my bath remodel? – Mario, Calabasas
You want to make sure that your agreement is very detailed, make sure that your contractor has everything line itemized. You can even put language like *This price will not exceed ___* and state your amount.

Make sure you put a penalty clause in your contract in the event he fails to complete the project when he says he will. For example: A $200.00 fee per day for every day he’s past deadline.
This will keep him on his toes to make sure he stays within the time frame. No contractor likes giving money back.
