Snaking vs Hydrojetting: What’s The Right Choice?

Hello, we are Jim and Dave Schuelke, with Twin Home Experts.

We’re here to talk about and answer the question: What’s the difference between snaking and hydrojetting?

Live here at a training facility, we are going to actually illustrate the snaking and hydrojetting methods in the video above.

So before we start, we want to show you exactly what we put into this line – which is paper products, roots, and sludge, the most common causes of backups.

Snaking method in action

As Juan gets the snaking method into action for us, you can see where the end of the cable is.

The end of the cable has gone through the paper products and it’s bound it up to the actual roots that are in the line.

You know what’s really cool is that cable slamming and breaking up that paper product in there. We’re actually right here. Now the cable is headed right to the sludge.

As you can see, the water kind of helps by pushing and cleaning the drain all at the same time.

If you follow along in the video, you can see that the cable is working through the sludge and binging on the roots.

Well, there you have it!

Once it breaks through the roots, the actual stoppages, which is the roots and the sludge, may hit a fitting. This means that the stoppage now is going to take a little bit more effort to go through the actual fitting to clear out the backup.

What’s left behind?

All right, now that the cable’s gone through the entire length of the pipe, we’re going to go ahead and extract the cable out, and see what the cable actually retrieved.

It actually pulled out more of the paper product than anything else. Obviously if there’s massive roots in that line that are coming in from a break, the cable method is not going to be as effective.

But as you can see, it does a pretty good job with removing that soft stoppage.

Now that we’ve retrieved the cable from the drain pipe, we’re going to go ahead and take a really good look and see if the cable left anything inside the line.

As you can see in the video, the cable did a pretty good job breaking down the stoppage, but it did leave a lot of the debris left inside the pipe, especially at the fitting area.

Let’s go ahead and see what hydrojetting does compared to what the cable method did.

Hydrojetting method

Next in the video, we demonstrate the hydrojetting process. But before we do that, we wanted to go over with Juan, our hydrojetting technician, what hydrojetting is.

“Hydrojetting is a way to clean to the pipe with high pressurized water at about 4000 psi. We utilize a hydrojet that shoots 12 gallons a minute, and has an end attachment called a laser penetrating tip, which goes down the pipe.”

As for the water in the pipe, there is one line going forward, and there’s multiple coming back, which propels it down the pipe and through the blockage.

For this demonstration we went ahead and installed some regular toilet paper as well as roots. For both our hydrojetting and snaking presentation, we added the stoppage downstream so the comparison would accurately portray the difference in the two methods.

After pushing the hydrojetting hose through, you can tell that the stoppage is completely cleared; it is spotless.

Comparison

So, what’s the difference between the snaking and hydrojetting methods?

The snaking method opens the line, but the hydrojetting actually opens and cleans the line.

Fixing The Rotten Egg Smell In Your Basement

Getting rid of the rotten egg smell in your basement

So your basement smells like rotten eggs. Have you exhausted all efforts to trying to stop that rotten egg smell in your basement? Hired ALL the experts to locate but just can’t seem to find the solution?
We hope the Twin Home Experts learning center will give you the insight you are looking for.
Twin home experts have performed over 1,500 leak detections in the Los Angeles and Phoenix areas, solving sewer gas odors and that mast rotten egg odor that can cause major inconveniences.
We’ve got recent clients here in Los Angeles who went through 1 year of loss rents from tenants due to a odor that nobody could find. They found us on our YouTube channel and they put us to the test!
We are so confident that we will detect leaks and odors that other leak detection experts can’t find, we will do it for FREE if we can’t solve the problem.

At the house

We arrived at the house, and sure enough it was a really bad rotten egg, sewer gas smell lingering in the basement.
Step 1 – The first step we took was to rule out ANY sewer pipes that we uncapped, cracked or left disconnected. The entire sewer system was replaced with new ABS pipe and fittings.
We then Performed a smoke test and nothing showed up as a breach in the entire sewer system.
Step 2 – We tested the gas lines in the basement. To verify no leaks, we use gas sniffing devices, but we recommend soap and water and make bubbles to apply on ALL the proximity gas joints, if any bubbles get big, this indicates a gas leak.
We verified and confirmed that it wasn’t a gas leak.
Step 3 – We then sniffed out every square inch of the basement concrete flooring, what we pin pointed was amazing!
It was a smell coming up through the concrete floor in a 12 inch by 12 inch area.
We then set up proper air filter scrubber machines and properly prepped the area for the excavation of this affected area.
We excavated down to 4ft and discovered 2 major things:
1 – table water
2 – rotten egg smell in the soil
We knew that this was a uncontrollable environment and needed to be addressed utilizing some creative methods, to exhaust outside the exterior of the home VS trying mask the issue.
basement smells like rotten eggs   basement smells like rotten eggs again

Basement rotten egg smell solution

Step 1 – Backfilled the hole using 3/4 to 1 inch rocks, terminated at the bottom of concrete by leaving about 4 inches of concrete to fill.
Step 2 – Installed a cast iron 3-inch floor sink, turned it upside down and laid it center of the hole, directly on the surface of the rock bed.
Step 3 – Poured concrete around the base of the floor sink, sealing the floor back up using 2500 psi concrete.
– Let this cure for 5 hours, before going to step 4
Step 4 – Install 3-inch abs pipe and fittings from the floor sink pipe stub out and terminate to the outside. This can be vented out using a inline fan motor – this will help draw the odor to the outside .
The cost for this type of work can be anywhere from $1,500.00 to $6,500.00

How Old Is Your Plumbing System?

When considering the different forms of plumbing repairs, it’s important to know the age of your pipes. If your home is old and your plumbing system is similarly, outdated, you could require a more extensive process to get your pipes functioning properly, such as trenchless sewer replacements.

Some pipe materials are known to fail if not intended to — for instance, cast iron and Orangeburg pipes have both been known to corrode and cause obstructions, pipe collapses, and dangerous plumbing situations. Any plumbing system is bound to have problems if it’s too old and the materials are near the end of their lifespan.

How do you determine the age of your plumbing system and how close you are to needing plumbing repairs?

This information could be pivotal for a person looking to buy a new home or a current homeowner looking for professional plumbing assistance. How can you tell how old your system is?

There are a number of ways to tell, just from looking at your exposed pipes, how old they are and how close you are to needing replacement. Jim and Dave, owners of Twin Home Experts and also two professional plumbers themselves, have put together a video to show you how:

So, as we saw in the video, there are three main determining factors that show your pipes may be near their deadline (or even overdue) so that you can make educated decisions about your plumbing repairs and services:

  1. Galvanized Material– Since galvanized seals only have a lifespan of about 30 to 40 years, they tend to cause issues in older homes. When you start to see rust and calcification marks on the elbow.
  2. Cast Iron– Check your non-pressurized pipes, which you’ll find beneath your sink connecting to the drain. If you notice these are made of cast iron metal, know that this material typically should only be in use for 30 to 40 years. After that point, corrosion, blockages, and even collapses tend to happen.
  3. No Copper Plumbing– At the front of your home, you should be able to find copper piping like the pipes shown in the video. Copper piping is a sturdy and reliable material — we recommend either this or PEX!

We hope this helps you with your plumbing repairs. As always, thanks for reading!

How to Clean Rain Gutters FAST! (From The Ground)

The Twin Home Experts show you how to clean rain gutters fast!

Clean Rain Gutters – fast and easy

This edition of Twin’s Tips and Tricks is all about rain gutters!

With Fall right around the corner, and we wanted to share insight on the best and easiest way to clean out those gutters.

The standard way most people clean rain gutters is just too complicated! Using a water hose, ladder, bucket and maybe a spatula – climbing up on the ladder, turning the water on and try to scrape at the same time you are hosing down the gutter. What a mess!

We’ve developed a really cool thing that we wanted to show you, and you can see it in the video above. All you need is 3/4 PVC, and a couple 45’s and a 3/4 cap with a hole in it.

Its got a double connection at the opposite end that connects to a male adapter and water hose.

The pressure built up through the pipe pushes the leaves out, making the process so much easier for you.

We hope this can simplify your cleaning routine, and bring out the creative side in you with a little DIY project!

Happy Fall,

Twin Home Experts
