How to Choose a Plumber Without Getting Ripped Off

Choosing the right plumber can feel like a daunting task.  Looking at the companies website may not give you the information that you need. Even checking online reviews may not give you the comfort level you want prior to choosing the right plumber.

So what can one do to prevent themselves from getting taken to the cleaners when choosing a plumber?  After 25 years of being in business we have come up with what we call the contractor qualification technique.  And it is a useful tool when choosing the right plumber.

First and foremost prior to calling any plumber be sure to check the license, bonding, and insurance of the professional.  Many consumers will ask the plumber if he has license, bond, and insurance, and the plumber will reply “yes, I do.” But, that is not sufficient enough. You should always ask for the plumber to provide you with the license, insurance, and bonding certificates. Or, you could always to go the Contractor State License Board and verify online. Then you can move forward with peace of mind. Now, back to our contractor qualification technique. It comes down to references. References? Yes, that’s right, references. Now before you say “I always ask for references when hiring my plumber,” ask yourself if you’re asking for them correctly.

There is a proper approach to this technique. The first thing you want to ask prior to asking for references is, “How many times have you done a job like mine”? If he responds with “I’ve done it 50 times.”  That means he should be able to give you nearly 50 references. If he only gives you 25, well that sounds like a 50% satisfaction rate. I don’t know how I feel about those odds.

“But Jim and Dave, the plumber told me he couldn’t give me more references due to privacy of the other homeowners.”

That is just a bunch of bologna. After 25 years in business we have only had a handfull of customers not let us use their name on our reference list. And that is because they were public figures or celebrities.

If they don’t want to give you the reference list you requested, simply walk away.  Surely there is someone else out there who is willing to be transparent with their business.

By using this contractor qualification technique you will be on a better path to finding the right Sherman Oaks Plumbers. For more homeowner tips, contact The Twin Plumbers today!
