Ask The Twins: Why Don’t Plumbers Give Prices Over the Phone?

Back in the 1980’s most large franchise companies started a trend of not giving any pricing over the phone, without taking an onsite look at your plumbing issue. Even to this day you will get the typical answer of “we don’t have pricing here in our office, but we can send a technician to give you an upfront estimate”. This method does make sense and is fair for both parties, the consumer and the plumber.
Price quoting over the phone can lead to “bait and switch” claims by the consumer because often the problem expressed over the phone is different once the plumber arrives on site. And the last thing a professional plumbing company would want, is to have to raise the price onsite if the issue is larger than expected. Generally, customers who call plumbing companies aren’t experienced enough to diagnose their plumbing issues, therefore furthering the reason for a plumber not to give a price quote over the phone.
The technicians want to be on site with the customer and be able to diagnose, fix, and offer repair options. This is also beneficial for the consumer, rather than allowing a plumber to give you a low price quote over the phone because he knows what you want to hear and that you’re looking for the cheapest pricing available. But once the plumber arrives, the price may change.
    • If you are concerned about pricing, ask to schedule a free estimate by the plumbing company if they offer it.
    • Most proffessional companies want to come out onsite to give a proper diagnoses, be fair with the consumer and show you the difference in service between them and their competitors.
    • Some companies may not want to give a price over the phone because they just choose not, but that doesn’t mean that they are a bad or unreputable company. It could just be the business model that works for them.
    • Other companies choose to give price ranges over the phone.
    • Hourly rate companies usually give their hourly rates over the phone, where flat rate companies most likely can’t give pricing without seeing the issue first.
