We often get calls directly from pest control companies to help track down where rodents are entering in with respect to the pipes in a home after they exhausted themselves searching everywhere else.
Mice often live in hidden areas within homes, including storage boxes, attics, lofts and wall interiors. They are capable of fitting through extremely small openings in floors, walls, foundations and pipes that are broken.
After they enter homes, they can be extremely difficult to get rid of.
Why it’s difficult to get rid of mice
Mice living within walls rarely leave their nests during daylight. Their presence is made obvious by gnawing and clawing sounds. Before attempting extermination methods, Los Angeles homeowners should properly identify their pests as mice. Other pests are also known to reside within walls and may require a customized method to control them.
Droppings and tracks are often visible in homes experiencing mouse infestations. Holes are also visible in walls, floors, ceilings and foundations. Case study: Finding the mice entry point
A Los Angeles rodent company uses Twin Home Experts to pinpoint where the entry points where mice are coming into the home. The customer can hear the mice scraping away at the inside walls as shown in this photo:
These marks make it very clear that this is where all the action and noise is happening, this is what’s keeping our customer awake at night.
So now that we’ve opened up stucco and verified the proof, we have to be on the hunt and perform detection work to pinpoint where these rodents are coming in.
So, we found a sewer vent pipe right next to the drywall scrapings inside the wall.
Our team went up on the roof and identified the pipe, setting up shop to inject smoke into this vent pipe to see if we can locate the breach or broken sewer pipe inside this wall.
We injected about 8 minutes of smoke into this drain vent stack and sure enough, inside the attic we found the broken pipe with smoke just pouring out.
This is where the mice entry point is into the inside walls of a home.
Our customer jumped up with joy that we found it! She stated that she has had so many professionals come out unable to find the mice entry points.

What you can do
- Fix any leaky outdoor faucets so you’re not providing pests with a water source.
- Inspect your home for any holes that pests could use as entry points. If you see any, have a professional properly seal them. Or better yet, have a professional do the inspection for you.
- Try to keep your gutters and yard free of all debris, including acorns, fallen fruit, gardens that have gone to seed, pinecones and so forth.
- Keep vining plants, shrubs and tree branches trimmed so that they don’t provide access to your home.
- Don’t leave pet food or water outside at night.
- Tightly tie trash bags and keep the lids to your trash cans secured.
- Keep a tidy home, especially in the kitchen. Don’t leave food out, and be sure to clean up spills and crumbs. Remember to sweep by your fridge, stove and trash can, wipe under toaster ovens and around rice cookers, and empty tray crumbs in toasters.
- Store food (including pet food) in containers made of metal or glass so that you’re not providing pests with an all-they-can-eat buffet.
- Stack firewood or leaf piles far away from your home.
- Make sure all drain pipes are secure and not broken like vents in an attic or wall.
