The water pressure in your home is determined by a number of variables. First of all, pressure is impacted by where you are in relation to the water source: what is the difference in elevation between your home and the public water supply? Being closer to sea level than the city water tank your home connects to causes the water pressure to be higher. Water pressure levels can also be impacted by periods of high demand. An average home has a water pressure level between 50 and 100 PSI (pounds per square inch) — but really, you should try to keep the pressure at around 80.

If the pressure in your home’s plumbing doesn’t seem quite right, there’s something that you can do. Jim from the Twin Plumbers has outlined how to adjust the water pressure in your home in this video:

As Jim says: find the water pressure reducing valve at the front or side of your house, then turn the bolt to change your PSI level. Clockwise will make the PSI increase, and counterclockwise will make it decrease. Then test the pressure at any faucet in your home. Remember to tighten the nut again when you’re done adjusting!
