How to get rid of drain flies?

Twin home Experts has been a Los Angeles drain cleaning expert for over 30 years. Our phone has been ringing from homeowners asking us how to get rid of “drain flies? They have tried using boiling hot water, bleach, baking soda, and other products, but the flies just keep coming back.

We frequently get asked – WHY DO DRAIN FLYS KEEP COMING BACK?

Drains over time build up biofilm in the inner walls of the pipe, hair, skin cells, soap scum make the perfect bed for the flies to lay their larva, then boom the flies begin to take over.

The reason why most products or hot water does not work as it does not penetrate the biofilm to the degree of killing off the larva.

It’s super important to try to identify where they’re coming from. If you have them all over your home, the first place to check is under the house. You may have a broken sewer pipe that is releasing sewage under the crawl space, this is the most common place most people miss when trying to stop drain flies. If you ruled out that your crawl space is clean, then start to isolate each room by closing the door and monitor.

Once you determine what room there is coming in from then follow these steps depending on what fixture they are coming in from.

Items you will need:

✅ Eyewear

✅ Brush (as shown in the video above)

✅ Enzyme or baking soda

✅ Wire hanger

✅ Long standard screwdriver

✅ Rags

✅ Shop vacuum

Step 1

Remove the shower drain cover

Step 2

Take a wire hanger or something to remove compacted hair and pull as much out as you can.

Step 3

Take the screwdriver and scrape the inside walls of the shower drain as much as you can.

Step 4

Use a shop vacuum to extract all loose debris from the shower drain

Step 5

Pour baking soda or enzyme into the drain

Step 6

Take your brush and scrub the inner walls of the drain.

Step 7

Turn on the shower and run hot water through the drain for a couple of minutes.

3 DIY Kitchen Sink Drain Fly Removal Steps

When it comes to kitchen sink drain flies they typically come from the garbage disposal.

Step 1

We recommend removing the garbage disposal, taking it outside, removing the build-up, and cleaning the rubber seal.

Step 2

Then with a small brush, clean the inside of the dishwasher drain hose before connecting back to the garbage disposal.

Step 3 

Take apart the pipes to gain access to the pipe coming out from. The wall and inspect how much compaction you have, if you have compaction remove the biofilm with a brush and vacuum.

Step 4

Run hot water to flush out any leftover debris that may still be lingering inside the drain pipe.

8 DIY steps to remove bathroom sink drain flies

Items you will need:

✅ eyewear

✅ small long Brush

✅ Enzyme or baking soda

✅ long standard screwdriver

✅ rags

✅ shop vacuum

✅ bright flashlight

Twin Tip: Bathroom sink drain flies are the easiest to remove.

Step 1 

Remove pop up assembly from the bottom of the sink

Step 2

Take your flashlight and look down the drain to see how much compaction you have. If there is a lot of build-ups, take your long screwdriver and loosen up Debris.

Step 3

Take a shop vacuum and extract all the loose debris from. The bottom of the sink.

Step 4

Pour Enzyme or baking Soda down the drain.

Step 5

Scrub the inside of the drain using a small long brush.

Step 6 –

Run hot water down the drain for a few minutes.

Step 7

Use a Small long brush, clean the inside of the little overflow hole at the backside of the sink.

Step 8

Pressurized Spray bottle, blast enzyme or vinegar into the small overflow hole to rinse clean.
