We had a large leak detection call in Beverly Hills last week, where the property owner was notified by the Beverly Hills Water Department that he had been losing a huge amount of water. Here at The Twin Plumbers, we learn something new every day about our trade. We recently received some great information from Kevin, an employee at the Beverly Hills Water and Power Department, who happened to be on the job site with us, and we wanted to share it with you today.

If you reside in Beverly Hills and have seen an increased water bill, and you want to contest it, you may want to think twice. The city is using a very sophisticated system called AMI which stands for Advanced Metering Infrastructure. It’s a fancy way to say “State-of-the-art meter reading.”
This system is reading your water usage by the hour and can identify leaks that you may not be aware of. If the city notifies you, that means you’re losing water at a high rate and the leak detection process should begin. The Neptune water meter has a two-way signal – it provides information to the city’s platform and from the platform back to the properties’ meter.
If you get the notification that water loss is occurring, check your toilets and fixtures to make sure they’re leak-free. The second place to look is your irrigation system. You can ask your landscaper or gardener to inspect the valves and heads throughout your property. If there are no visible signs of a leak, then reach out to a detection company who has the proper equipment to locate where the leak is. A typical leak detection cost using safe gas, nitrogen, location devices, and running tests is in the range of $250.00 to $850.00, depending on the size of the property.
