What to Know Before Hiring a Plumber

    Tiwns

    Start with the obvious.

Licensed, bonded and insurance.  Don’t skip checking for a license. This is particularly important.   Many consumers are unaware that they can go right online to the state license board and check the status of the contractor’s license.

    Bonding and Insurance

Just because they are licensed does not mean they are automatically bonded and insured.  These signify the signs of a good contractor.  Always a great idea to check and see if the bonding and insurance is in good standing and not expired.   Sometimes a plumber may overlook an expired bond or Insurance.  So always ask for copies of the updated certificates from the plumber prior to hiring.

    Friends and Neighbors

Checking with friends, neighbors, or family members can sometimes be a great way to find a reliable plumber.   Some people overlook this one, but may be the best way to find the right plumber.  Who better to get a reference from than your family?

    Great Communication Skills

After setting up an initial consultation or site visit, pay close attention to how the plumber communicates.  Some companies will send out a technician who can not convey information well enough for you to understand what’s going on with your plumbing.   Many plumbers are great at their trade, but when it comes to communication skills, they may be lacking in that department.

    Truck and Tools

The way a plumber keeps his truck and tools is a good way to gauge his work performance.  If he keeps his truck looking shabby and unorganized, what makes you think he is going to care about your property?  If his tools are in a pile, how is he supposed to work diligently at the right pace with the right tools?  Chances are he rushes his work trying to get the job done fast and throws all his tools in a pile and onto the next job.
