Is it the Sink or the Water? Use These Tips to Find Out
Try to determine if the odor is there all the time, or only when you use the sink. Smell the water to see if it has an odor to it. Fill up a cup, walk away from the sink and smell the water.
If it’s the water
Odors from the water are commonly caused by the water heater. Most water heaters are going to have parts called anode rods. These anode rods will wear away with age and use. And can let off an odor during the wear away process. For this issue you will most likely need to call a plumber to repair the anode rods and check out the water heater to verify.
If it’s not the water
See if you can determine if it is coming from the drain itself or the overflow to your sink. Sinks will have an overflow that drains into the drain utilizing the sink. You will notice a hole in your sink. Try pouring some bleach in the overflow port. When using chemicals be sure to do multiple applications over a few days. Once or twice of a cleaning may not be enough to make the odor go away.
Bio-Clean
Bio cleaners work by breaking down organic matter. They are better to use than chemicals because they will not harm your drain piping. You can pick these drain cleaners from your hardware stores. They work, but do take tieme to break down the organic matter. It can take up to 14 days or so to start working.
If it’s the drain
Make sure you take apart the drain under your sink to remove any buildup or debris. The most common cause for odors in sinks is the buildup from the top of the drain to the p-trap. So make sure you remove the contents and clean them very well. After cleaning them as best as possible use a natural drain bio-cleaner to help remove any residual build up you may have missed.
