We know that it’s the holiday season, and everyone’s thoughts are on hosting family and friends — not plumbing. But here at the Twin Plumbers, we want to make sure that everyone has everything they need moving into the new year…and if you have a water heater that is older than 6 years, you’ll want to start looking into water heater replacement.
Of course, whenever you see any of the following symptoms of impending water heater failure, you should call a professional to schedule inspection and possible replacement or repair:
- Rust or Corrosion on Machine
- Leaks/Water Puddling on Floor
- Cold Showers
- High-Than-Normal Utility Bills
- Produces Discolored, “Rusty” Water
- Water is Only Luke-Warm
- Device is Past Warranty/Older than 6 Years
However, it’s particularly critical that you look into replacement right now, because regulations passed by the DOE (Department of Energy) have raised the energy standard for water heaters, and those changes go into effect in 2015!
So why does this matter? Well, having a higher efficiency water heater can be beneficial in a number of ways, but having this device installed can be difficult. This is because newer water heater models will require insulation, making the machine larger. It may not fit into the formerly designated space. In addition, they may require a differently sized gas line — these alterations can make for an expensive way to start the new year! These new regulations go into effect for residential water heaters in April of 2015. Before then, you can get your water heater replaced without having to upgrade.
This means you have a few options:
- Wait, and when you need a replacement, install the higher efficiency device as mandated.
- Get your replacement now, that way you’ll have 8 to 12 years before having to worry about the upgrade step.
- Install a higher efficiency water heater replacement, such as a tankless water heater, and preempt the changes in 2015.
On the subject of water heater replacement, here’s a video we filmed about a water heater we installed not too long ago…that was before the efficiency standard was raised, but the new water heater will not expire for at least a few more years!
Well, that’s all for today folks — as always, thanks for watching!
