Homeowner Tips: How to Replace a Toilet Handle

Plumbing can be an intimidating task.  Many people want to call the plumber every time they have a plumbing need.  But behold folks, replacing your toilet handle is a very simple task.  You can do it without having to call a plumber!  Let’s go over some of the necessary steps to getting that toilet handle replaced.

First you will have to get yourself a new toilet handle.  Just make sure you get the appropriate handle.  If it helps, remove the handle first, and then go match up the appropriate size handle at the local hardware store.Removal of the toilet handle and replacement can all be done without flushing the toilet tank.  Since the handle sits higher than the water level you will not need to empty the tank.

Go ahead and remove the chain from the flapper to the handle. You do not need to remove the chain from the flapper.  You only need to remove the chain from the handle.  Make sure you pay attention to where the chain “hook” was attached at the handle.  This is important with the new handle, because if the chain “hook” is not connected at the exact same length from the toilet flapper to the new handle the toilet will not flush properly

You will then need to remove the nut that holds the handle to the toilet tank.  Careful when removing the nut, as the threading is in the opposite position.  If you follow the “righty tightey” “lefty loosey” rule remember that in this case its the opposite.

Once the old handle is removed, go ahead and place the new handle in the slot of the toilet tank.  Go ahead and slide the nut over the shaft of the handle. Important that you do not over tighten the nut.  The handle is plastic and so are the threads.  Being that the water level does not fill over the handle, the handle and its threaded connection does not need to be waterproof tight.

After the handle is in place go ahead and install the chain to the handle.  Be sure to have the chain at its appropriate length.

Once installed, be sure to test the handle and verify it is working properly by flushing the toilet multiple times.
