Bad Connections Can Cause Serious Damage
Here, in the Los Angeles area, there are several types of materials used for drain lines that you should know when making any type of connections. Here, at The Twin Plumbers, we have performed over 3,000 drain connections from inside a wall, ceiling, underground, sub garages to city sewer line under the street, all affecting the way you make the connections with the correct fittings and correct pipe. We have seen some bad connections that have caused some major damage to properties, so it’s imperative to have some understanding of the proper ways and proper fittings to join sewer pipes together.
ABS/PVC PIPE:
If you’re working with a plastic material such as an ABS or PVC pipe then simply glueing the fittings is all you need to do using the appropriate glue specifically for waste water. Make sure the outside pipe and inside of the fittings are clean from dust and debris. Simply apply the glue to the inside of the fitting and to the outside of the pipe then put them together, its always a good idea to hold them together for a few seconds before releasing them to insure a tight seal .
CAST IRON PIPE:
This metal pipe takes a little more knowledge to work with, it’s important to use the right fittings and have the tools for proper installation. You will need to buy a torque wrench, local hardware stores have them for about $12.00. The type of fittings to make a good connection is a NO HUB coupling, this has 2 to 4 bands on the outside with a rubber seal on the inside. When you torque down evenly on the bands, the coupling tightens making a great no leak seal.
COPPER DRAIN:
Here in Los Angeles, there are properties that have copper drainage systems. Here, you will need to know the size of the lines and have the abilities to solder.You can purchase a soldiering kit and safety glasses especially if your working under a sink or tight work area. Make sure the pipe and fitting are cleaned so the solider takes very well and creates a great seal completely around the hub of the fitting.
CLAY PIPE:
This type of red material is typically found outside the property and will run all the way out to the city sewer main.
All rubber couplings are used to join the connections. Simply slide the all rubber coupling by loosening the bands to one side of the pipe, then join the pipes together as close as possible by them touching at each end. Once this is in place, slide the rubber coupling centering it to the middle of the pipe connection. Once in place, tighten the bands evenly and very tight until your torque wrench clicks.
GALVANIZED PIPE:
This type of material is an all metal pipe and the only fitting to make the connections is DWP fittings where they will screw on, so again understand the size of pipe your working with. The other way to make connections of the pipe, is also using a no hub coupling,where the bands are on the outside with a rubber material on the inside. Tighten the bands after installing the rubber seal evenly on the actual pipe.
Any time you make any connections to your drainage system, it’s always best to perform a running water test. The best way to test your work is to fill up the the particular fixture a few times and let the water release. This allows the water to flow down with a great water flow insuring a tight seal.
If your making any connection to drain pipes that are hanging, make sure the pipe connections are securely strapped. This also applies inside of a wall. Here, at the Twin Plumbers, we always install the proper strapping material on each side of the coupling, this allows great support and less tension on the connections.
