How do I get rid of rats in my kitchen myself?
If you’re a homeowner that wants to try to deal with your kitchen rat problem on your own here are some inside tips that twin home experts want to offer you to get them out.
The first step in solving your rat problem in your kitchen is to remove ALL food sources (including roses and flowers that are out in the open.)
If you’re feeding your cat and dog in your kitchen, always remove the food immediately after your pet has eaten so it doesn’t stay out in the open. This will attract rats to your kitchen!
TIP: leaving pet food out? rats can take this food and store it under your kitchen cabinets, dishwasher, etc. SUPER important to remove.
Here is a job we did when rats came through the kitchen cabinets and ……
As you can see in the video we had to find the entry points from the outside in order to permanently solve this rat infestation in the kitchen.
4 rat entry points that are often missed in your kitchen:
✅ Check the doggie door. Do you see any dark markings which are the rats’ sebum that they leave as they come and go?
✅ Check door seals. Shut the lights off. Can you see more than 1/2 of daylight coming through around your door seals?
✅ Check oven burners. Pull up the oven top to inspect the burners. Often the rats will nest in this area. Do you see any nests or signs of rats?
✅ Pull the oven out and inspect where the gas line comes out of the wall. Is there any area where a rat could enter?
If you do find nesting materials in this area, it’s possible the rats are coming from the attic and following the gas line down into your kitchen.
Do you have rats in your kitchen wall?
If you hear rats in your kitchen wall (especially behind your kitchen sink), you may be dealing with the Norway rat. These rats come from the city sewer and can chew their way through sense a breach in the sewer system to get into your home.
How to determine and detect if you have rats coming from your sewer system:
✅ Roof vent sniff test: Get on your roof, identify the roof vent that comes from your kitchen sink drain, then sniff the vent stack to identify any possible smell of rodent urine. You don’t have to be an expert to identify this potent smell. You can compare this vent stack to the other vents and you will notice a huge difference if rats are present inside your kitchen wall.
If the kitchen vent stack has a distinct urine odor (ammonia smell), here’s what to do next:
✅ Get into your attic or crawl space with a bright flashlight to try to see any openings in the exposed kitchen vent and drain pipe.
✅ Look for rat runways in the attic and crawl space.
✅ You may need to find a local professional like Twin Home Experts to perform a sewer camera inspection.
✅ If running a camera down the vent stacks and drain pipes doesn’t provide a full inspection, then hire a local expert like Twin Home Experts to perform a smoke test to locate the breach.
Here’s an example of how we use smoke testing to find rats:
