What’s the most common toxic mold Twin Home Experts finds in Los Angeles homes?

Our mold remediation team has performed over 5,000 mold removal projects in Los Angeles for homeowners, tenants and businesses.

Most people think that the black mold is the most common and most toxic, but after performing so many jobs, the black toxic mold is only about 30 percent of our mold removal jobs. This black mold comes from water seepage or slow leaks from long term damage.

It’s called Stachybotrys, a genus of molds, hyphomycetes or asexually reproducing, filamentous fungi, now placed in the family Stachybotrys Aceae.

Historically, it was considered closely related to the genus Memnoniella, because the spores are produced in slimy heads rather than in dry chains. This for sure is a VERY smelly mold.

The most common mold in Los Angeles that makes people sick

The most common mold we see in a house that is affecting people’s overall health is a mold called Aspergillus Penicillium, It’s a genus consisting of a few hundred mold species found in various climates worldwide. Aspergillus was first catalogued in 1729 by the Italian Priest and Biologist Pier Antonio Micheli.

This mold creeps up in places that you would never think.

    Toxic mold case study

We just finished a celebrity’s brand new home, the house was spotless, you can eat off the floor. The celebrity would go on location and noticed she was feeling great, as soon as she came home, within a few days she was feeling lethargic, with constant headaches. She then went to the doctors who recommended a blood sample and sure enough tons of aspergillosis was in her bloodstream.

She Googled mold removal companies near me and she clicked on the Twin Home Experts to test for mold and investigate where this mold was coming from.

We did a walk through of the entire home and it was spotless. Took moisture readings in bathroom walls, completely dry. We started doing air testing throughout different rooms (kitchen, living room and multiple bedrooms rooms) and turned the air tests to the laboratory.

We waited for 24 hours and the results were shocking. The tests we took in the kitchen came back extremely HIGH with aspergillosis penicillin, the same mold that was found in her bloodstream.

Now that we had narrowed to the kitchen area, we then searched under the cabinets, above the kitchen cabinets, dishwasher and nothing. We then noticed that she had a large sub zero refrigerator and the motor was mounted above the refrigerator doors, so we removed the panel and BAM!

There it was – the motor, compressor and piping were completely congested with dust, moisture, heat and compaction.

This hidden mold was causing so many health issues and put our client through so much grief.

How much did this project cost?

This was a simple mold removal project being that nothing had to be demoed. This mold removal was a deep cleaning and required Major HEPA vacuum, wipe down and then a very aggressive fogging with our mold removal products. The fogging gets into places that you cannot reach and eradicates the mold. We also sanitized the air conditioning ducting and cleaned the air handler.

The mold removal costs for a project can range from $1,872 to $3,872.
