A bubbling toilet is one of those odd plumbing troubles that may make you scratch your head. Our clients have reported bubbles in their toilets when the bathtub drains, when the sink is used, and sometimes seemingly for no reason at all. Typically, toilets will bubble and back up when a wet venting system is in place and multiple drains filter down to a single pipe. When there is a blockage in this single pipe, water may back up into the shower, the sink, the toilet, and any other plumbing fixtures serviced by that pipe (which is why you might see soap bubbles in your toilet).

Bubbling toilet water isn’t the only symptom of such blockage. Slow flushing and drainage could also be indicators of serious clogging, as well as gurgling in drains of fixtures that are not currently in use. (i.e. sink drains that gurgle while the shower is running, bathtub drains that sputter when the toilet flushes, etc.) When something is blocking multiple plumbing fixtures, it could be a sign of something more serious than a hairball.

To start, use a drain snake in your sink and shower to get rid of hair that could be building up in your drain. If that doesn’t work, be wary of using chemical treatments to unclog your drain, as these can do more long-term damage than good. If you aren’t able to remove the blockage or fix the problem, don’t try to do anything further without a professional plumber.
