Homeowner Tips: Watch Out For Small Leaks, Avoid Mold

In the plumbing world, a small leak can be a serious problem. Unfortunately, many homeowners do not feel the same way. They are under the impression that a small problem like this will eventually take care of itself; this is not usually the case.We get questioned all the time: “How can such a small leak turn into such a big problem?” Well, here are three different reasons:

    1. Over time a small leak will allow the water to migrate through the floor, walls, and pretty much anything else it comes in contact with.

This will not happen overnight, but over the course of several months, standing water, which is constantly added to, will cause serious damage. Especially when water draining is required. This is even more so the case if you cannot see the leak and can’t clean it up from time to time.

Under sinks, crawl spaces, attic spaces and basements are areas that are notorious for leaks that aren’t discovered for a very long time.

    2. Mold is a major problem, and the main culprit is long-term moisture.

A small leak can lead to mold and related issues in no time at all, we have seen it here at The Twin Plumbers. Mold can grow in less than 24 hours and is a health hazard for those living in the house. Also, water damage caused by a small leak can cause structural damage that can be very costly to repair.

    3. A leaking pipe, valve, or fixture can lead to poor performance.

This may not be a huge problem, but when you turn the water on it will feel like something is a bit “off.” This may be the least of your concerns, but one that should tip you off that something is wrong.

Don’t let anyone tell you that a small leak is no big deal!

Instead, identify the problem. Taking care of it immediately is very important and will save you money in the long run.

When you suspect a leak in your home or on the property think twice about ignoring it. See our “Do It Yourself” videos to assist you in resolving the issue. We have seen what could have been a very simple and low cost plumbing repair turn into a $40,000 repair. If you need to hire a plumber make sure he is qualified   to detect and repair the leak. If the leak caused damage protect your property by performing the proper sanitization or dry down steps to ensure full protection of your property.

A quick Twin Plumbers TIP: Your property insurance more than likely does not cover slow long term leaks, so you would be denied coverage in the event you’d want to put in a claim if you wait too long.
